"Are there any bats?" is one of the most frequently asked
questions about our tours.
Appalachian
Caverns is proud to be the summer home for a colony of Grey
Bats. Once upon a time these furry little creatures were the most
abundant mammal in the southeastern United States. Through vandalism,
habitat destruction, urban sprawl and the interference of man they have now been
listed as an Endangered Species.
The caverns is
also inhabited by several other species of bats all year round. On just
about every tour you can see the very common Eastern Pipistrelle. Also
often seen are Big Brown Bats.
